The Gobbins Cliff Path

Antrim County, Ireland

This was an AMAZING hike full of views and information as it can only be completed by booking a tour. Davy was my tour guide and he was very knowledgeable about the history of the path as well as current efforts to maintain the bridges and landscape surrounding the attraction.

Helmets are required as there is a section of dark caves the hike goes through which were very narrow and short for my 5 foot 9 self. Additionally, the caves can flood throughout the year; I walked through about a half inch of water. The caves were used for smuggling and it was neat to be able to walk a small portion of history.

The decent just to get down the the coast where the hike starts is honestly the most strenuous section even though it is fully paved. Just remember you have to go back up to catch the ride home so it will be a steep climb at the end.

While very enjoyable to the eye, the rest of the hike is a mix of very sturdy rock (Honestly! Not one rock moved underneath my foot on this hike and I think that is a first and last for my hiking career), metal catwalks, and bridges. I did not find this hike technically difficult but the views were totally worth every minute.

Apparently the last portion of the hike is an active breeding grounds for seagulls and puffins! Yes, I said Puffins! I just wish I had been able to see a puffin the day I hiked the path, but the guide said they were seen a few days before and might have moved on.

While I highly doubt this hike will win “Best hike of Ireland”, I do think the history and uniqueness of the path itself makes it worthwhile addition to any hiker’s bucket list!

Until next time!
